Angeliki Papoulia biography

BIOGRAPHY

Angeliki Papoulia was born in Athens, Greece. She is an actor and theatre director. She graduated from the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (Department of Theatre Studies) and the Empros Theatre Drama School in 2000. She speaks English and French.

In 2004 she co-founded the blitz theatre group (2004 – 2017). She has written, co-directed and acted in all the group’s performances. The group has presented its performances in various major Festivals and Theatres in Europe (Festival d’Avignon, Theatre de la Ville, La Comedie de Reims, Schaubuhne Theatre, Thalia Theatre, Barbican Centre) and Greece (Athens and Epidaurus Festival, Onassis Cultural Centre, National Theatre). Lately she has co-directed with Christos Passalis theatre performances at Luzerner Theater in Luzern, Switzerland. She has also appeared in performances directed by Lefteris Vogiatzis, as well as Greek National Theatre productions directed by Yannis Houvardas and Yorgos Lanthimos.

In cinema, she participated in Yorgos Lanthimos’s Dogtooth (Older daughter) which won the Un Certain Regard Prize at the 2009 Cannes Film Festival and was nominated for a Best Foreign Language Film at the Academy Awards (Oscars) in 2011. It was followed by numerous awards at festivals worldwide. For her role in Dogtooth she was awarded with the Heart of Sarajevo for Best Actress at the Sarajevo Film Festival 2009. She also participated in Yorgos Lanthimos’s Alps (Nurse) which won the Osella for Best Screenplay at the 2011 Venice Film Festival and Best Film at the Sydney Film Festival in 2012 and in The Lobster (Heartless Woman) which won the Jury Prize at the 2015 Cannes Film Festival. She has played in A Blast (Maria) and in The miracle of the Sargasso Sea (Elisabeth) directed by Syllas Tzoumerkas. For her role in The miracle of the Sargasso Sea she won the Best Actress Award at the Hellenic Film Academy Awards 2020. She has also participated in Matchbox (Kiki) directed by Yiannis Economides, Silence 6-9 (Anna) by Christos Passalis, Human Flowers of Flesh (Ida) by Helena Wittmann, A little Love Package by Gaston Solnicki and other feature films.

She has been a jury member at the Locarno Film Festival Pardi di domani Jury (2016) at the Sarajevo Film Festival Competition Jury (2016) at the Istanbul Film Festival Competition Jury (2018) at the Karlovy Vary Film Festival Competition Jury (2018) and at the Thessaloniki Film Festival Competition Jury (2019).
